Instrumental and Vocal Lessons
Music plays a vital role throughout the Scotch Oakburn
College curriculum from Middle to Senior School.
Students are exposed to a variety of musical opportunities.
They perform, compose, and learn about styles of music,
music technology, music history and much more. Within
both Middle and Senior School, classes aim to broaden
each student’s understanding of music and assist each
student to find ways of participation in our musical
Music is an activity experienced through participation.
Music comes from within as a response to the outside;
it is an expression of self and of our concept of others.
Younger children are uninhibited in their expression and
they communicate openly by using their own unique
instrument – their voice. Through our structured music
program this enthusiasm for musical expression is focused
over time to become increasingly understood, developed
and appreciated. Participating in classroom music at
Scotch Oakburn College means having fun creating and
playing music on instruments and computers along with
listening to and talking about the music we hear around us.
As students grow, their musical skills increase and hence,
a wider range of musical options are offered.
In the Middle School Music Program students engage
with music through making and responding. Central to
the Middle School Music Program are the Kodaly and Orff
pedagogical approaches where students experience music
through singing, performing on instruments, movement
Music in the Senior School builds upon the skills and
understandings students have developed in the Middle
School. In Years 9 and 10 students studying Music will
further develop their performance skills on their instrument
of choice, as well as continuing to develop their music
literacy. Aural and theoretical skills are developed to
assist students to understand how their music, and the
music of others, is created. These skills further enhance
the students’ ability to practice and perform with great
efficiency and effectiveness.
The strong performance focus of the Year 9 and 10 Music
Program in conjunction with the development of music
literacy skills prepares students for challenges of Music at
Students are taught by experienced and professional
music educators who specialise in instrumental pedagogy.
Through the development of their instrumental technique
and musical understanding students will develop a sense
of achievement and personal satisfaction as they achieve
their musical goals. During their lessons students do not
just learn how to play their chosen instrument, they also
develop theory, ear-training and sight-reading skills, as
well as their general knowledge.
Students will be provided a list of resources required
for learning an instrument. For example, this may include
technique books, solo repertoire, reeds, valve oil, strings,

individual or shared lessons. Lessons occur weekly
and are timetabled during the normal school day.
Extended lessons are offered to the College’s Senior
students to assist in their preparation for more advanced
examinations, such as AMEB Grade 5 and above, and
students studying TCE or UTAS performance courses.
All students undertaking instrumental or vocal lessons
are expected to participate in at least one of the College’s
large ensembles (i.e. choir, band or orchestra)
Scotch Oakburn College offers a large number of
instruments for students to learn and play in a College
1. Guitar tuition is offered in all styles at Scotch Oakburn
College. All students learning guitar must play in
one ensemble and attend the Guitar Ensemble that
rehearses at lunchtime.
2. Students learning drum kit are expected to learn other
percussion instruments and participate in at least one
of the College’s ensembles.
3. Piano students are required to either learn another
instrument or join one of the College’s ensembles or
choirs. Percussion, especially keyboard percussion (i.e.
orchestral xylophone) is an ideal second instrument.
